Meditation cushion sets

For those of you just embarking on a meditation practice for the first time, you might be wondering if should invest in special meditation cushion sets for prolonged seated periods.  Investing in these is good idea if you are serious about developing a strong meditation practice. The cushions facilitate mediation by lifting the pelvis, allowing the body to maintain the natural curvature of the spine, and reducing the energy required to sit up straight.

Typically you'll see a circular bolster cushion called a Zafu that is placed under the hips to support alignment of the spine. The legs are then usually crossed comfortably at the ankles and shins, with hands gently resting on the knees or lap.  The larger or rectangular square cushion that is seen here underneath is known as a Zabuton. This can be roughly translated as a futon for sitting. Again this  provides additional comfort, warmth and support for long periods of meditation on top of a hard floor surface. Finding a comfortable position during meditation can reduce tension in the body, reduce agitation and help you find a better state with a positive influence on your state of mind.

The Zafu should be between 5-8 inches high from the floor, as this is normally suitable for all heights and is usually around 14 inches wide in diameter.   The outer coverings are often made of natural fibres such as cotton or linen, but ideally should be removable to permit cleaning. Fillings can vary, but commonly consist of one of two materials, kapok  or buckwheat hulls. Both have advantages and disadvantages, and choice will ultimately come down to personal preference.  I chose a buckwheat hull filling because it provides the benefit of conforming to the shape of the body, which I feel offers a more comfortable seated mediation experience, but the right one is  always the one that feels right for you.

Science is beginning to prove the benefits of a dedicated meditation practice and although this can take many forms, any time spent meditation is time well spent participating in self care. Meditation is an opportunity to raise your vibrational energy, by simply being in tune with your inner universe.
